Coverage Topics

A simpler framework for understanding common auto policy sections.

Most personal auto policies are built from a few recurring categories. Reviewing them in a consistent order can make policy documents easier to compare and discuss.

Liability coverage

Liability coverage is generally intended to address covered damage or injury you may cause to others. Drivers often review bodily injury and property damage limits closely because they can influence how much protection is available in more serious incidents.

  • Bodily injury liability typically relates to injuries to others after a covered loss
  • Property damage liability typically relates to covered damage to another party’s vehicle or property
  • Policy limits matter because they define the available coverage ceiling

Physical damage coverage

Collision and comprehensive coverage are often grouped together because both relate to damage involving your vehicle, but they are triggered by different circumstances. Collision is generally associated with impact losses, while comprehensive may apply to certain non-collision events like theft, vandalism, or weather-related damage.

Deductibles and limits

A deductible is the portion of a covered loss a policyholder is typically responsible for before the insurer’s payment is calculated. Reviewing deductible amounts alongside coverage limits can help clarify the tradeoff between premium cost and potential out-of-pocket expense.

Optional add-ons

Depending on the policy and state, drivers may also see options such as roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, medical payments coverage, or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. These additions can be useful to review separately so it is easier to understand which protections are core and which are elective.
